Frequently Asked Questions
- India's GST has four main tax slabs: 5% (essential goods โ sugar, tea, coal), 12% (processed foods, phones below โน12,000, medicines), 18% (most goods and services โ restaurants, hotels, electronics), and 28% (luxury goods โ cars, tobacco, aerated drinks). Essentials like raw food, education, and health services are at 0% (exempt).
- To add GST: Amount with GST = Original price ร (1 + GST rate/100).
To remove GST from a GST-inclusive price: Original price = Total price รท (1 + GST rate/100).
GST amount = Total โ Original price.
Example: โน1,000 product with 18% GST โ Total = โน1,180. GST = โน180. - When goods or services are sold within the same state (intrastate), GST is split equally between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). A product with 18% GST = 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For interstate transactions, the full rate applies as IGST (Integrated GST), which is then apportioned to the destination state.
- Australia has a flat 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST), unchanged since its introduction in 2000. Most goods and services are subject to GST except fresh food, some medicines, and education. To calculate: price including GST รท 11 = GST amount; price excluding GST ร 1.10 = GST-inclusive price.
- Canada's federal GST is 5%. Most provinces also apply a Provincial Sales Tax (PST) or Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). HST provinces (ON, NB, NS, NL, PEI) combine federal and provincial tax: Ontario = 13% HST; Nova Scotia = 15% HST. Alberta has no PST, so only 5% GST applies.
- UK VAT standard rate is 20%. Reduced rate (5%) applies to domestic fuel, children's car seats, and some energy-saving products. Zero rate (0%) applies to most food, books, children's clothes, and prescriptions. Businesses must register for VAT if taxable turnover exceeds ยฃ90,000 (2026 threshold).
- GST (Goods and Services Tax) and VAT (Value Added Tax) are essentially the same concept โ a consumption tax applied at each stage of the supply chain, with businesses reclaiming the tax paid at previous stages. Countries use different names: India, Australia, Canada, Singapore = GST; UK, EU = VAT. The mechanics are nearly identical.
- Zero-rated (0% GST) items in India include: fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, eggs, meat (unprocessed), bread, salt, stamps, printed books, newspapers, bangles, handloom items, and educational services. Healthcare services and most government services are also exempt. The GST Council updates exemption lists periodically.
