Frequently Asked Questions
- The basic damage formula is: Damage = [((2 ร Level / 5 + 2) ร Power ร A/D) / 50 + 2] ร Multipliers. 'A' is the attacker's relevant stat (Attack or Special Attack), and 'D' is the defender's relevant stat (Defense or Special Defense).
- STAB is a 1.5ร multiplier applied to the damage of a move if the move's type matches one of the Pokemon's types. For example, a Fire-type Pokemon using Flamethrower deals 50% more damage.
- Type advantages multiply the final damage. A 'Super Effective' hit deals 2ร damage (or 4ร if double effective), while a 'Not Very Effective' hit deals 0.5ร damage (or 0.25ร). Some types are immune (0ร damage).
- Physical attacks use the Attack stat vs. the defender's Defense. Special attacks use the Special Attack stat vs. the defender's Special Defense. You can tell the difference by the icon next to the move in the game.
- In recent generations (Gen 6+), a critical hit deals 1.5ร damage. It also ignores any negative stat changes on the attacker and any positive stat changes on the defender.
- Damage isn't fixed; it's multiplied by a random number between 0.85 and 1.00. This is why the same move can deal slightly different amounts of damage each time it's used.
