Frequently Asked Questions
- To calculate a weighted grade, multiply each score by its weight (as a decimal), then sum the results. Formula: (Score1 ร Weight1) + (Score2 ร Weight2) + .... For example, if your midterm (worth 40%) is 80 and your final (60%) is 90: (80 ร 0.40) + (90 ร 0.60) = 32 + 54 = 86%.
- Use the formula: Required = (Target โ (Current ร (1 โ Weight))) รท Weight. If you have an 85% (current), want a 90% (target), and the final is worth 20%: (90 โ (85 ร 0.80)) รท 0.20 = (90 โ 68) รท 0.20 = 22 รท 0.20 = 110%. You'd need a 110% to reach your goal.
- To calculate GPA, assign points to each letter grade (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0), multiply by credits, sum the points, and divide by total credits. Formula: Total Grade Points รท Total Credits. A 4.0 scale is the most common standard in US high schools and colleges.
- Divide the points earned by the total points possible and multiply by 100. Formula: (Earned รท Total) ร 100. If you got 18 out of 20 on a quiz, your grade percentage is (18 รท 20) ร 100 = 90%.
- Add up all points earned across all assignments and divide by the sum of all possible points. This is an unweighted point system. If you earned 450 total points out of 500 possible, your final grade is 90%.
- In a 4.0 system: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Sum the points for each class and divide by the number of classes. Weighted GPAs may award 5.0 for AP or Honors classes.
- Most semesters are weighted by quarters and a final exam. Common split: 40% Q1 + 40% Q2 + 20% Final. If you got 90, 85, and 80: (90 ร 0.4) + (85 ร 0.4) + (80 ร 0.2) = 36 + 34 + 16 = 86% for the semester.
- College GPA is almost always credit-weighted (a 4-credit science class impacts GPA more than a 1-credit lab). High school GPA may be unweighted (all classes equal) or weighted (AP/IB classes given extra points).
- Add all your individual grades together and divide by the number of grades. This assumes all assignments have equal weight. Formula: (G1 + G2 + ... + Gn) รท n. For weighted averages, use the weighted grade formula instead.
- In most US systems, a 'D' (60โ69%) is the minimum passing grade to earn credit, while a 'C' (70โ79%) is often required for prerequisites or to stay in 'good standing' in college. 'F' (below 60%) is failing.
