Frequently Asked Questions
- To calculate your GPA, multiply the points for each grade by the number of credits for that class, sum the results, and divide by the total number of credits. Formula: ฮฃ (Grade Points ร Credits) รท Total Credits. For example, an 'A' (4.0) in a 3-credit class and a 'B' (3.0) in a 4-credit class = (12 + 12) รท 7 = 3.43 GPA.
- The standard 4.0 scale is: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0. Many schools use a plus/minus system: A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, F=0.0.
- To find your cumulative GPA: (Total Grade Points to date + New Semester Grade Points) รท (Total Credits to date + New Semester Credits). You cannot simply average your semester GPAs unless every semester had the exact same number of credits.
- Unweighted GPA treats all classes equally on a 4.0 scale regardless of difficulty. Weighted GPA awards extra points for challenging classes like AP, IB, or Honors (often A=5.0). Colleges usually look at both to understand your academic rigor.
- First, convert each percentage to its letter grade or point equivalent based on your school's grading scale (e.g., 90-100% = 4.0). Then use the standard credit-weighted GPA formula. Our calculator allows you to select letter grades directly for accuracy.
- A 'W' (Withdrawal) typically does not affect your GPA. 'P/F' (Pass/Fail) or 'S/U' classes usually award credit but are excluded from the GPA calculation. However, some schools count an 'F' in a Pass/Fail class as 0.0 points in your GPA.
- The fastest way to raise your GPA is to earn high grades in classes with more credits. Retaking a class you failed or did poorly in can also have a massive impact if your school uses a grade replacement policy, where the new grade replaces the old one in the calculation.
- A 'good' GPA depends on the institution. Competitive universities often look for a 3.5 or higher. However, admissions officers also consider the strength of your curriculum, your class rank, and your standardized test scores alongside your GPA.
- Semester GPA = Total Grade Points in the semester รท Total Credits taken in the semester. This is a snapshot of your performance over a single term and is used to determine Dean's List eligibility or academic probation.
- In Excel: (1) List credits in column A and grade points in column B. (2) In column C, use
=A1*B1to get quality points. (3) Use=SUM(C:C)/SUM(A:A)to find the weighted GPA. Our online tool is faster and handles the letter-to-point conversion for you.
