How to Use
Time Difference: Enter a start and end time to see the gap in hours, minutes, seconds, and decimal hours.
Add Durations: Enter multiple time durations and get the running total โ useful for tracking project time or summing workout segments.
Convert: Enter a number of hours to see equivalent values in all other time units.
Formula
Difference = End time (seconds) โ Start time (seconds) Decimal hours = Total minutes / 60 | If negative, add 86,400 s (midnight crossing)
Frequently Asked Questions
- Subtract the earlier time from the later time. If the result is negative (crosses midnight), add 24 hours. For example, 9:00 PM โ 1:30 PM = 7 hours 30 minutes. This calculator handles midnight crossings automatically.
- Convert both times to minutes (hours ร 60 + minutes), subtract, then divide by 60. Example: 5:45 PM (1065 min) โ 9:15 AM (555 min) = 510 min = 8.5 hours.
- Add all hours together, then all minutes together. If minutes exceed 60, carry over to hours (60 min = 1 hr). For instance, 1h 45m + 2h 30m = 3h 75m = 4h 15m.
- When end time is before start time, the duration spans midnight. Add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting. Example: start 11:00 PM, end 6:00 AM โ (6:00 + 24:00) โ 23:00 = 7 hours.
- Use the time difference mode: enter your clock-in time as start and clock-out time as end. Subtract your break time to get net hours worked. For payroll purposes, convert to decimal (e.g., 7h 30m = 7.5 hours).
- Overtime typically starts after 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week. Subtract the threshold from total hours worked: Overtime = Total hours โ 8 (daily). Time-and-a-half pay = Overtime hours ร 1.5 ร hourly rate.
- Multiply hours by 60. Examples: 1.5 hours = 90 minutes, 2h 45m = 165 minutes, 8 hours = 480 minutes. To convert back, divide minutes by 60 and take the remainder for leftover minutes.
- Divide minutes by 60 and add to hours. Example: 7 hours 20 minutes = 7 + (20/60) = 7.333 hours. Most payroll systems use decimal hours (also called hundredths of an hour).
- Elapsed time is the difference between a start and end moment. Use the time difference mode with the start and end times. For elapsed time across multiple days, multiply days by 24 hours and add the time portion.
- This time calculator is accurate to the second when seconds are provided, or to the minute when only hours and minutes are entered. It accounts for midnight crossings and correctly handles both 12-hour and 24-hour time formats.
