- Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the traditional etiquette. However, tipping on the total (after tax) is increasingly common and makes calculation easier. The difference on a typical bill is small โ on a $100 meal with 8% tax, 20% tip on pre-tax = $20 vs $21.60 on post-tax.
- The standard in the US is 15โ20% for sit-down restaurants. Many people use 20% as a baseline because the math is easy โ just move the decimal one place (10% of bill) and double it. For poor service, 10โ15% is acceptable; consider speaking to a manager instead of stiffing.
- Common practice is $1โ2 per drink for simple orders, or 15โ20% for a larger tab. For craft cocktails or extensive service, 20%+ is appreciated. Starting with a good tip often leads to better service throughout the evening.
- 15โ20% of the order total, with a minimum of $3โ5 for small orders. Tip more for long distances, bad weather, large orders, or excellent service. Note that app-based delivery fees rarely go to the driver โ the tip is their primary income supplement.
- It's courteous to tip on the original pre-discount price, since the server's work is based on what you ordered, not what you paid. However, if you have a gift card or coupon, tipping on the full value is considered polite but not required.
