Calculate IELTS Score: Overall Band Formula and Examples
Learn how to calculate IELTS overall band score from Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking scores, including half-band rounding examples.
To calculate IELTS score, start with the four section band scores: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The overall band is the average of those four scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.
Formula
Overall band = (Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking) / 4
Each section has equal weight.
Example 1
| Skill | Band |
|---|---|
| Listening | 7.0 |
| Reading | 7.0 |
| Writing | 6.5 |
| Speaking | 6.5 |
Average:
(7.0 + 7.0 + 6.5 + 6.5) / 4 = 6.75
Overall band = 7.0
Example 2
| Skill | Band |
|---|---|
| Listening | 6.5 |
| Reading | 6.5 |
| Writing | 5.5 |
| Speaking | 6.0 |
Average:
24.5 / 4 = 6.125
Overall band = 6.0
Rounding Rule
IELTS overall bands use whole and half bands. Averages ending in .25 round up to the next half band. Averages ending in .75 round up to the next whole band.
Important Limit
This formula calculates the overall score from section bands. It does not replace official IELTS scoring, and it does not perfectly convert raw Reading or Listening correct-answer counts for every test version.
The Bottom Line
Add your four IELTS band scores, divide by 4, and round to the nearest whole or half band. Use official results for applications and immigration requirements.
