To calculate IELTS score, start with the four section band scores: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The overall band is the average of those four scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band. Understanding this formula helps you plan your preparation, set realistic targets, and know exactly what you need to improve before the test.
The IELTS Band Scale
IELTS uses a 9-band scale:
| Band | Description |
|---|---|
| 9 | Expert user |
| 8 | Very good user |
| 7 | Good user |
| 6 | Competent user |
| 5 | Modest user |
| 4 | Limited user |
| 3 | Extremely limited user |
| 2 | Intermittent user |
| 1 | Non-user |
Each section (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) receives a whole or half band score. The overall band is then calculated from these four.
Overall Band Formula
Overall band = (Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking) รท 4
Each skill section has equal weight of 25%.
IELTS Rounding Rules
IELTS overall bands are reported in whole and half bands only (e.g., 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0). The calculated average is rounded to the nearest 0.5.
| Calculated Average | Reported Overall Band |
|---|---|
| X.00 | X.0 |
| X.125 | X.0 (rounds down) |
| X.25 | X.5 (rounds up) |
| X.375 | X.5 |
| X.5 | X.5 |
| X.625 | X.5 (rounds down) |
| X.75 | (X+1).0 (rounds up) |
| X.875 | (X+1).0 |
The key breakpoints are .25 (rounds up to next half) and .75 (rounds up to next whole).
Worked Example 1: Score of 7.0 Overall
| Section | Band |
|---|---|
| Listening | 7.0 |
| Reading | 7.0 |
| Writing | 6.5 |
| Speaking | 6.5 |
Average = (7.0 + 7.0 + 6.5 + 6.5) รท 4 = 27.0 รท 4 = 6.75
Applying rounding: 6.75 rounds up to 7.0
Worked Example 2: Score of 6.0 Overall
| Section | Band |
|---|---|
| Listening | 6.5 |
| Reading | 6.5 |
| Writing | 5.5 |
| Speaking | 6.0 |
Average = (6.5 + 6.5 + 5.5 + 6.0) รท 4 = 24.5 รท 4 = 6.125
Applying rounding: 6.125 rounds down to 6.0
Worked Example 3: Score of 6.5 Overall
| Section | Band |
|---|---|
| Listening | 7.0 |
| Reading | 6.5 |
| Writing | 6.0 |
| Speaking | 6.5 |
Average = (7.0 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 6.5) รท 4 = 26.0 รท 4 = 6.5
Overall band = 6.5
What Overall Band Score Do You Need?
Requirements vary by institution and immigration program:
| Program Type | Typical Minimum Overall Band |
|---|---|
| UK Skilled Worker Visa | 4.0 (minimum), often 6.0+ required |
| UK Student Visa | Usually 5.5โ6.5 |
| Australian Skilled Migration | 6.0โ7.0 depending on visa |
| Canadian immigration (various) | 6.0โ8.0 depending on stream |
| US University admission | 6.5โ7.0 typically |
| UK medical registration | 7.0โ7.5 |
Always confirm requirements directly with the institution or immigration authority โ minimum bands can change and may differ by section, not just overall.
Section Score Strategies
Because each section counts equally, a weakness in one area significantly drags down your overall. Here is how to think strategically:
If you need 7.0 overall:
| Scenario | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Average | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Balanced | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 |
| Weak Writing | 8.0 | 8.0 | 5.5 | 7.5 | 7.25 | 7.5 |
| Very weak Writing | 9.0 | 8.5 | 5.0 | 8.5 | 7.75 | 8.0 |
Offsetting a low Writing score with much higher scores elsewhere is hard because you are already at the top of the scale in other sections. It is usually more efficient to improve the weakest section directly.
Understanding Section-Specific Scoring
Listening and Reading
These sections are marked by counting correct answers. The number of correct answers is then converted to a band score using a conversion table. The exact cutoffs vary slightly between Academic and General Training tests.
Approximate Reading (Academic) conversion:
| Correct Answers | Approximate Band |
|---|---|
| 39โ40 | 9.0 |
| 37โ38 | 8.5 |
| 35โ36 | 8.0 |
| 33โ34 | 7.5 |
| 30โ32 | 7.0 |
| 27โ29 | 6.5 |
| 23โ26 | 6.0 |
| 19โ22 | 5.5 |
| 15โ18 | 5.0 |
These are approximate โ the official band conversion tables are issued by Cambridge and may shift slightly by test version.
Writing and Speaking
Writing and Speaking are assessed by trained IELTS examiners who use detailed band descriptors covering:
Writing: Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Speaking: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, Pronunciation
There is no raw score โ examiners apply holistic judgment using the descriptors.
Important Limitations of the Formula
This formula calculates your overall band from known section bands. It does not:
- Convert raw correct-answer counts to bands for every test form
- Replace official IELTS marking
- Account for Test Report Form (TRF) validation
Always use your official Test Report Form for visa, immigration, and university applications.
The Bottom Line
To calculate your IELTS overall band, add your four section scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), divide by 4, and round to the nearest whole or half band using the IELTS rounding rules. The critical rounding breakpoints are .25 (rounds up to half) and .75 (rounds up to whole).
Use the Grade Calculator to average numbers during practice, and always confirm with your official TRF for formal applications.
