Searching calculate my rashi on my date of birth usually means you want your Vedic astrology sign. Rashi is an important concept in Jyotish (Vedic astrology), the ancient Indian astrological tradition. In many contexts, rashi refers to the moon sign โ€” the zodiac sign occupied by the Moon at the moment of birth.

Use our Birth Chart Calculator for astrology-style birth details including moon sign and planetary placements.

What Is Rashi?

Rashi (เคฐเคพเคถเคฟ) means โ€œheapโ€ or โ€œgroupโ€ in Sanskrit and refers to the 12 zodiac signs in both Vedic and Western astrology. However, the term rashi is most commonly used in Vedic astrology to mean the moon sign (Chandra rashi or Janma rashi) โ€” the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the time of birth.

The 12 rashis are:

NumberRashi (Sanskrit)Western Equivalent
1MeshaAries
2VrishabhaTaurus
3MithunaGemini
4KarkaCancer
5SimhaLeo
6KanyaVirgo
7TulaLibra
8VrishchikaScorpio

Rashi in Vedic Astrology vs Western Astrology

There are two major differences between Vedic and Western astrology systems:

1. Rashi vs Sun Sign

In Western astrology, most people identify with their sun sign โ€” determined by the date of birth based on where the Sun was in the zodiac.

In Vedic astrology, the rashi (moon sign) is often considered more personally significant. The moon represents the mind, emotions, and instincts in this tradition.

2. Sidereal vs Tropical Zodiac

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, aligned with the seasons (Spring Equinox = 0ยฐ Aries).

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, aligned with actual star positions in the sky. Due to a phenomenon called precession of the equinoxes, the two zodiacs are currently offset by about 23โ€“24 degrees (called the ayanamsa).

This means a person with a Sun in Aries (Western/tropical) might have Sun in Pisces (Vedic/sidereal). The same shift applies to moon signs.

Why Date Alone May Not Be Enough

The Moon moves through each zodiac sign approximately every 2.5 days. This means:

  • If your birth date falls when the Moon is in the middle of a sign, the date alone can usually tell your rashi.
  • If your birth date falls near a Moon sign change (when the Moon is transitioning from one sign to the next), birth time becomes critical.

Missing the birth time by a few hours could put you in a different rashi entirely near a sign boundary.

Example:

If the Moon moves into a new sign at 11:30 AM on your birthday, someone born at 9:00 AM has a different rashi than someone born at 2:00 PM โ€” same date, different rashi.

What Information Is Needed for an Accurate Rashi

For the most accurate result:

InformationImportance
Date of birthEssential โ€” sets the base planetary positions
Exact birth timeImportant โ€” Moon sign can change mid-day
Birth city/locationNeeded for accurate chart; affects time zone calculations
Time zoneUsually determined from birth location

If you do not know your exact birth time:

  • Your date alone may be sufficient if your birthday falls well within a signโ€™s transit period
  • Near a sign boundary, the result is uncertain without time
  • Check a birth certificate, hospital records, or ask family for the time

Rashi vs Lagna (Rising Sign)

There are two other important signs in Vedic astrology that are different from rashi:

Lagna (Ascendant/Rising Sign): The zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. This changes approximately every 2 hours and requires both birth time and place to calculate. It is the starting point of the entire house system in a Vedic chart.

Sun Sign (Surya Rashi): The sign the Sun was in at birth. This is what Western horoscopes are based on. In Vedic astrology, it is also considered but is typically secondary to the moon sign in personal readings.

Many Vedic astrologers give approximately equal weight to the Sun sign, Moon sign (rashi), and rising sign (lagna) when interpreting a chart.

Nakshatra: The 27 Lunar Mansions

Vedic astrology also uses a system of 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions) โ€” divisions of the zodiac that are about 13.3ยฐ wide each. Your birth nakshatra is the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth.

The nakshatra is used in:

  • Naming traditions (some families choose a name based on the birth nakshatra)
  • Marriage compatibility matching (kundali matching)
  • Muhurta (auspicious timing)
  • Dasha (planetary period) system โ€” the Moonโ€™s nakshatra at birth determines the first dasha period in life

Calculating your nakshatra requires accurate birth time and location.

Kundali Matching and Rashi

One traditional use of rashi in Indian culture is kundali matching (horoscope matching for marriage compatibility). The process typically checks 36 points (gunas) across various compatibility factors.

One of those factors is rashi compatibility โ€” whether the bride and groomโ€™s moon signs are considered compatible. Some rashis are traditionally considered complementary; others may need additional positive factors elsewhere in the chart.

This practice is part of traditional Vedic astrology and should be understood as a cultural framework, not a scientific compatibility measure.

Can You Have Multiple Rashis?

No โ€” you have one birth rashi (the sign the Moon was in at birth). However, you will have:

  • One sun sign (Surya rashi)
  • One moon sign (Chandra rashi โ€” typically what people mean by โ€œrashiโ€)
  • One rising sign (lagna)
  • Planetary placements in other signs

All of these together form a complete Vedic birth chart.

The Bottom Line

To calculate rashi on your date of birth, look up where the Moon was in the zodiac on your birth date. For dates near a Moon sign boundary, birth time and location are also needed for accuracy.

Use the Birth Chart Calculator to generate your moon sign, sun sign, and rising sign based on your birth details. Treat the result as an entertainment and self-reflection tool within the Vedic astrology tradition.
